The family in the New Urban Agenda
Our struggle for global sustainability will be won or lost in cities. The potential of urbanization to lift millions of people from poverty and to accelerate economic growth is huge, as demonstrated in recent decades by some of the major emerging economies. Ensuring that urbanization contributes effectively to sustainable development involves addressing a number of major challenges. These include: inadequate urban planning and weak legal frameworks; low levels of employment, especially among young people; and inadequate access to basic services for the rapidly increasing urban population. In addition the proliferation of slums and increasing informality in economic, housing and transport activities bring their own challenges.
